NBPTS and NETS-T Reflections

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) has five core propositions that enhance teaching.

The International Society for Technology in Education has also developed the NETS-T standards for using technology in the classroom.

Both of these sets of standards promote developing goals for students, monitoring student learning and teacher reflection. The NBPTS standards encourage goal-setting and student-monitoring be done by the teacher, whereas the NETS-T standards encourage students to take part in these aspects as well. The NETS-T standards also encourage the use of technology in all aspects of teaching and learning. While the NBPTS standards state that teachers should be part of learning communities, the NETS-T standards take this a step farther by encouraging both teachers and students to be part of the global community through online interactions.

I work to implement most of the standards above in my classroom. I work with my students on setting goals and design instruction to help them reach those goals. The classroom is a learning community where students learn to work together and problem-solve, as well as reflect upon what worked well and what areas need improvement. However, I need to work more towards being part of learning communities and helping my students to utilize technology in order to apply what we are learning to the real world and communicate with other students around the world.
